10 cornerbacks the Commanders could select in the 2023 NFL Draft
By Dean Jones
Commanders could draft Joey Porter Jr.
One of the cornerbacks being strongly linked with the Washington Commanders throughout the pre-draft process represents an immediate contributor with Pro Bowl potential. Joey Porter Jr. comes from a footballing pedigree and has everything one looks for in a productive shutdown presence providing his transition from Penn State to the pros goes smoothly.
Porter is fast, physical, and thrives in press coverage. He gets after it against the run and plays with an edge that would make him an instant fan favorite in Washington for good measure.
Commanders could draft Julius Brents
If the Commanders are looking for a dominant cornerback with exceptional athletic gifts, Julius Brents could be the guy at No. 47 overall. The Kansas State product is a little rough around the edges in terms of technique, but he could be absolutely anything if everything comes together.
Brents is a physical freak with the speed to go downfield with any wide receiver. There is a tendency to bite on fakes that must be refined, but it’s not hard to see why the prospect’s draft stock has soared throughout the evaluation stage.
Commanders could draft Garrett Williams
Considering the talent at Garrett Williams’ disposal, it’s been shocking to see the former Syracuse star become an afterthought. Especially considering he looks well on track to make a full recovery from a torn ACL suffered in October.
Williams’ length is his main asset. His feet are quick, there is enough sharpness in the player’s route anticipation to go off, and he also has no trouble wrapping up opposing receivers at the catch point.
Providing everything checks out medically, this could be a tremendous bit of business for the Commanders. Perhaps even in the third round depending on how things unfold.
