Sam Howell is ready to seize Commanders’ chance

Despite the rumors surrounding a new regime set to make wholesale changes once the Washington Commanders officially get a change of ownership, head coach Ron Rivera has not deviated from the plan in place. This includes moving forward at the quarterback position with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett in 2023.

Howell is likely to get the first shot, but Brissett will push him every step of the way. Something that will be one of the most fascinating elements to monitor throughout the preparation process.

When speaking to Washington’s senior vice president of broadcasting Julie Donaldson, Howell made his intentions clear. This centers on seizing the moment and giving the Commanders everything he has to enhance confidence heading into the 2023 campaign.

"“That’s what I’ve been trying to do ever since I got here is get into this opportunity. So, I’m definitely going to try to do everything I can to take advantage of it. I just feel a lot better coming into this year knowing that I learned a lot last year, and I know a lot of stuff now that I didn’t know then. This organization is going to get everything I got. I’m just going to give this opportunity everything I have.”"

Howell starting and thriving represents the best-case scenario for the Commanders. One that could even save Rivera’s job along the way if everything goes much better than anticipated.

The former fifth-round pick has talent, there’s no getting away from that. However, there is almost no legitimate game-day NFL experience for Howell to call upon with just one career start under his belt as a rookie.
