5 offensive tackles the Commanders could select in the 2023 NFL Draft
By Dean Jones
Which promising offensive tackle prospects could the Washington Commanders potentially select during the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft?
If the Washington Commanders want to improve their chances of mounting an NFC East title challenge next season, fortifying the offensive line early in the 2023 NFL Draft is of critical importance. Andrew Wylie and Nick Gates represent two decent free-agent signings that can start right away, but adding another talented prospect or two from the college ranks will only strengthen the team’s cause.
It would be a shock to see the Commanders ignore their protection over the opening two rounds. If head coach Ron Rivera is steadfast in his belief that Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett can improve distribution under center, then boosting those in front of the starting quarterback could be the catalyst behind better fortunes.
Despite Charles Leno Jr. and Wylie being projected to start as Washington’s tackle tandem, ignoring a gifted group of prospects would be foolish. And based on the team’s pre-draft interests, it’s something those in power are seriously considering.
With this in mind and working on the premise that Paris Johnson Jr. and Peter Skoronski will be off the board, here are five offensive tackles the Commanders could select in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Offensive Tackle No. 1
Commanders could draft Dawand Jones
Dawand Jones has momentum on his side after a standout 2022 campaign at Ohio State. He is also an absolute mammoth human being with the physical profile needed to become a forceful edge presence with a smooth transition from college to the pros.
According to ESPN’s draft analyst Jordan Reid, the Commanders have taken a shine to Jones thanks to his unique blend of size, length, and agility. Selecting him at No. 16 overall might be a reach, but it cannot be ruled out if the primary decision-makers are particularly enamored by the prospect.
