Commanders could draft Anthony Richardson

  • Quarterback | Florida Gators

This is the longest shot of all. But something that might completely shift the Washington Commanders’ thought process during the 2023 NFL Draft.

Anthony Richardson is a fascinating and polarizing quarterback prospect in equal measure. His athletic intangibles are absolutely off the charts, but there is some significant development needed before he’s ready to assume command of an NFL offense from a starting role.

Richardson’s stock has never been higher after a historic display of athleticism at the NFL Scouting Combine. His encouraging development during his one and only season starting for the Florida Gators could mean big things in the player’s future if he takes on NFL coaching.

It would be a bombshell of epic proportions if Richardson made it to the Commanders. However, the notion was explored by Ryan McCrystal from Sharp Football Analytics, who had the signal-caller dropping to the Seattle Seahawks at No. 20 in his latest mock.

Trading up for Richardson is a non-starter where the Commanders are concerned. If he fell into their laps, then betting on his generational upside might be worth considering despite Ron Rivera’s happiness with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett heading into the 2023 campaign.

Anyone that takes Richardson is betting on traits rather than college production. But if the prospect does manage to put everything together, he’ll take the league by storm.
