Commanders could draft Devon Witherspoon

  • Cornerback | Illinois Fighting Illi

Much like the offensive line situation, the Washington Commanders need to add another cornerback early in the 2023 NFL Draft. Someone with the potential to start right out of the gate and make their presence felt.

There are a number of intriguing options at the top end of this year’s class. Much will depend on how the draft board plays out, but Devon Witherspoon is likely to be high on Washington’s shortlist if this is the avenue they choose to pursue at No. 16 overall.

Witherspoon has every intangible associated with productive NFL cornerbacks. He is fast, explosive, and instinctive in equal measure, making him a player with shutdown potential if everything goes smoothly.

One area where Witherspoon thrives is in press coverage. His physicality shifts wide receivers off their routes comfortably and the prospect is also fully aware of where the first-down marker is at all times.

There is also a lot to like about Witherspoon’s work ethic. His motor is first-class, he goes looking for work against the run and has a knack for stopping opposing runners dead in their tracks with supreme ferocity.

Witherspoon might be a top-10 selection and the first cornerback taken. But if he does make it down to the Commanders, they shouldn’t take long to turn in their card.
