Who could end up being huge losers from another dramatic offseason period for the Washington Commanders so far in 2023?

It’s been a busy offseason for the Washington Commanders. There’s been the usual urgent activity in terms of recruitment to the coaching staff and playing personnel, with the ownership saga bringing another dramatic dynamic that could see the franchise embark on a life without Dan Snyder at long last.

What’s the most important thing on the football side is being competitive in 2023. The Commanders weren’t a million miles away from the playoffs last season, so a few tweaks could be enough to make a significant challenge for the NFC East despite its increasing difficulty.

With the draft almost a fortnight away, preparations will soon ramp up as minicamps, OTAs, and Washington’s training camp become the primary focus. And make no mistake, everything must go right to avoid any unnecessary complications and speculation.

Looking back, here are three potential losers from the Commanders’ eventful offseason so far in 2023.

Phidarian Mathis – Commanders DT

After lasting just a few snaps in 2022 due to injury, Phidarian Mathis was probably hoping for an extended role on the Washington Commanders’ defensive front in 2022 with Daron Payne’s status with the organization in doubt. However, those in power made tying down the former first-round pick their biggest priority.

Payne signed a four-year, $90 million deal with $60 million guaranteed. This makes Mathis a rotational piece at best over the next few years unless the one-time Alabama star does enough to demote the starting defensive line interior tandem, which is highly unlikely.
