5 running backs the Commanders could select in the 2023 NFL Draft

Commanders could draft Keaton Mitchell
As stated previously, the Washington Commanders should identify a running back that can excel in the passing game. Something that would assist Eric Bieniemy and quarterback Sam Howell during their respective transitions in 2023.
Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson can do the hard yards depending on the situation. But having a reliable outlet out of the backfield on third down would be an untold positive for the Commanders ahead of a critical 2023 campaign.
In this regard, Keaton Mitchell fits the bill. The East Carolina product is an elite route-runner with the hands to match, so this is a prospect well worth considering in the mid-to-late rounds.
Mitchell is a physical runner – albeit relatively small in stature. He keeps his legs moving well and has enough straight-line speed to turn small gaps into huge yardage consistently.
Much like the situation with Tyjae Spears, there’s not a lot to like about Mitchell’s pass blocking. The lack of NFL-type size is also going to put some teams off when push comes to shove.
With that being said, Mitchell could be a major asset to the Commanders and Bieniemy as a pass-catching specialist that might evolve into something more. The player also has some experience as a kick returner that can be developed.
