5 running backs the Commanders could select in the 2023 NFL Draft
By Dean Jones
Which running backs could the Washington Commanders realistically bring into the organization during the 2023 NFL Draft?
Even though the Washington Commanders have a strong running back tandem in Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson heading into the 2023 campaign, those in power could still acquire another dynamic option from the college ranks. Something that would provide Eric Bieniemy with another potential difference-maker following his landmark switch from the Kansas City Chiefs.
This looks like a pretty good class for running backs. The Commanders have other needs that might take priority, but there’s nothing to suggest some value cannot be had further down the board if the right prospect is acquired.
Robinson could be set to thrive under Bieniemy’s guidance in 2023. Gibson also offers encouragement as a potential change of pace No. 2, but releasing J.D. McKissic with a failed physical designation means a third option is needed unless Jaret Patterson makes significant strides.
With that in mind, here are five running backs the Commanders could select in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Running Back No. 1
Commanders could draft Bijan Robinson
Let’s start with the least likely – but a wildcard that cannot be dismissed entirely. Bijan Robinson is the best running back in the 2023 class by a considerable margin and looks set to take the NFL by storm immediately based on his exceptional college production at Texas.
Robinson looks like a three-down threat capable of wreaking havoc on any given down. His patience, explosiveness, pass-blocking, and vision are ready for the pros right out of the gate, but taking him at No. 16 overall is a major risk for the Washington Commanders if they went in this direction.
Strengthening the offensive line or finding a shutdown cornerback should be prioritized before a luxury like Robinson. Although much will depend on Bieniemy’s input as his influence behind the scenes grows.
