The Washington Commanders managed to secure a solid haul from Chad Reuter’s latest four-round 2023 NFL mock draft.

After some shrewd signings in free agency that didn’t break the bank, Ron Rivera and the Washington Commanders have turned their attention quickly to the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. One that could provide an extra level of quality to the roster if the right college recruits are acquired.

With a talented roster in place, further strides are well within the Commanders’ reach if they can hit some home runs during the draft. However, much will also depend on quarterback Sam Howell and whether he can thrive in a starting role if the former fifth-round pick beats out Jacoby Brissett for the job.

Rivera and his staff have an added sense of urgency with new ownership set to be confirmed in the not-too-distant future. But a good draft can potentially be enough to see them emerge as legitimate challengers for a postseason spot barring any drastic injury complications.

Commanders get decent haul from NFL.com four-round mock

The Commanders were given a solid haul from Chad Reuter of NFL.com‘s recent four-round mock draft. This began by selecting O’Cyrus Torrence – the former Florida interior offensive lineman – at No. 16 overall.

"“Torrence’s power in the running game and short-area quickness make him a top-20 prospect.”"

While this is a deep class for guards and centers that could result in finding value a little further down the pecking order, Torrence represents a Day 1 starter and an immediate upgrade for Washington’s protection. One that could spell the end for veterans like Andrew Norwell with cuts needed to sign their draft class.

Reuter’s second-round pick for the Commanders added another weapon on offense for Eric Bieniemy. Luke Musgrave has all the makings of a highly-productive pass-catching tight end that should thrive under the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, who relied on the position with great effect during his successful spell with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Another area of need that must be addressed during the draft is finding a capable cornerback. Something Reuter left until the third round when Jakorian Bennett became Washington’s selection.

Bennett is going a little under the radar compared to his old Maryland teammate Deonte Banks. However, that shouldn’t detract from what a decent NFL player he can become with a smooth transition.

Rounding off Washington’s picks at No. 118 is Dorian Williams, a ferocious linebacker from Tulane that comes into the assessment process on the back of 132 tackles, five sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, and two interceptions for the Green Wave in 2022.

Williams is hard-hitting, can influence proceedings on a three-down basis, and is a sideline-to-sideline presence at the defensive second level that has no trouble inspiring others around him. Something the Commanders could use alongside Cody Barton and Jamin Davis next season.

The Commanders also have a bevy of picks on Day 3 to strengthen their depth and perhaps allow for a luxury or two along the way. But this represents a nice set of selections that only adds to the team’s firepower on both sides of the football.

Only time will tell as to whether or not any of the aforementioned prospects end up in the famous burgundy and gold.
