Commanders must acquire a shutdown CB

The Washington Commanders have a defense that could be among the league’s best next season with a few tweaks. Their defensive front is dominant and the linebacking corps should also improve following the arrival of Cody Barton from the Seattle Seahawks in free agency.

Darrick Forrest and Kamren Curl represent an outstanding young safety tandem, so it’s not hard to see why hopes are so high. However, for the Commanders to take that next step under defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, they must emerge from the 2023 NFL Draft with a shutdown cornerback.

This looks like the missing piece of the puzzle. Kendal Fuller, Benjamin St-Juste, and Cameron Dantzler Sr. could be productive, but having an elite option from the college level would make all the difference next season.

Washington must address this need within the first three rounds. The talent level drops off significantly after that, so using the No. 16 overall selection on a gifted defensive back is a realistic option all things considered.

The likes of Joey Porter Jr., Christian Gonzalez, Devon Witherspoon, Deonte Banks, and Kelee Ringo should be on the shortlist. Having a ball-hawk capable of creating turnovers at will such as Emmanuel Forbes makes him an enticing proposition that shouldn’t be overlooked.
