Eric Bieniemy’s influence on Commanders’ draft plans
Eric Bieniemy was the undoubted marquee addition to the Washington Commanders this offseason. The promise of more control played a leading role in his decision to leave the Kansas City Chiefs, which could make a huge difference in the pursuit of finally getting a head coaching opportunity sooner rather than later.
Bieniemy has full control of the offense, formed a coaching staff capable of helping the respected figure reach his goals, and is also getting a leading voice in personnel matters. Something that could lead to a surprise or two when the 2023 NFL Draft rolls around.
When approached about how Bieniemy’s influence is impacting the Commanders in terms of recruitment, Ron Rivera stated it was all about fit. He has also been fascinated to hear his assistant head coach/offensive coordinator’s passion and insight throughout the pre-draft process via Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.
"“He has a lot of say because it’s important. As we go through the process, it’s about fit. These guys gotta fit what he wants to do as far as a draft pick is concerned. We’ve talked about it and it’s funny because you listen to his philosophy on certain positions and it’s very pronounced. It was real informative listening to him and listening to his personality too, and how confident he is about certain things.”"
There are clear needs that must be addressed, which should take priority above all else. But the Commanders must also surround Bieniemy with everything he needs to make a real go of things in a different environment.
Bieniemy placed a lot of faith in the Commanders this offseason. It’s time for the franchise to repay the favor.
