3 Commanders with emerging importance after free-agent moves in 2023

Jeremy Reaves – Commanders DB
The story surrounding Jeremy Reaves is an inspiring one. Few will ever forget the viral video of Ron Rivera telling the special teams ace he’d made the Pro Bowl in 2022, but this didn’t come with a bigger commitment from the Washington Commanders when push came to shove.
Many thought Reaves would be rewarded for his outstanding progression with a long-term deal. Instead, the Commanders opted to place a $2.6 million tender on the defensive back rather than anything more concrete.
If Reaves shines again next season, the decision to tie him down is an easy one. And there could be a chance for more reps on the defensive rotation with one notable addition to the secondary in free agency and Bobby McCain becoming a salary-cap casualty.
Washington has Darrick Forrest and Kamren Curl as their starting safety tandem. Percy Butler is also expected to make strides before his sophomore campaign, but don’t overlook Reaves becoming increasingly influential with momentum on his side.
Reaves is a determined character who takes nothing for granted. His rise from undrafted free-agent afterthought to an All-Pro will ensure an integral role on special teams, but the player has bigger plans in mind with another offseason of development under his belt.
And if one thing has become clear about Reaves, you write him off at your peril.
