4 big offseason gambles that could pay off for Commanders in 2023

Commanders gambled on Eric Bieniemy
There’s no denying what the biggest acquisition by the Washington Commanders was throughout the offseason to date. After helping the Kansas City Chiefs win another Super Bowl, the franchise managed to convince Eric Bieniemy this was the place to convince people once and for all he is worthy of becoming an NFL head coach.
Bieniemy became the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator after lengthy discussions with those in power. This also comes with a big pay increase, full control of the offense, and a leading say in personnel matters to further enhance his influence.
This is a leap of faith from Bieniemy, who is impressed by the players at his disposal in Washington and had nothing but praise for Ron Rivera during his introductory press conference. It was time for the respected offensive guru to emerge from Andy Reid’s shadow, which is arguably the one thing that’s prevented him from securing a top job to date.
There is a concern about Bieniemy’s ability to make an immediate impact. Albeit slight considering the credentials he brings to the organization.
He has high demands of his players and can rub up some the wrong way – just ask LeSean McCoy. But the Commanders have no room for passengers with so much at stake in 2023, so this could be the spark that ignited the offense to bigger and better things next season.
