3 telling Commanders quotes heading into the 2023 NFL Draft

Commanders might not prioritize OL
Something had to be done across the offensive line this offseason. The Washington Commanders couldn’t rely on their previous options with any real conviction, so their early free-agent moves were necessary and welcome in equal measure.
The Commanders signed Nick Gates and Andrew Wylie soon after the legal tampering period began. This gives them two new starters, but more might be needed considering the distinct lack of consistency almost from start to finish last season.
Despite many projecting the Commanders to draft an offensive lineman in the first two rounds, Ron Rivera might have other ideas. Based on his comments at the NFL owners’ meetings, the head coach seemed relatively pleased with how the protection is shaping up with OTAs just around the corner.
"“We made a concerted effort during free agency to go out and fortify the line. Add some depth to the line. Add some competition. We have some guys that are also position flex guys, so it’ll give us an opportunity to see the best places to have these guys and integrate them with the guys that are currently on the roster.”"
This is smoke and mirrors season, so it’s hard to gauge one way or another if Rivera’s comments hold any weight. Taking an offensive lineman early in the draft is dependent on general perception within the building and if the Commanders get lucky with someone high on their board becoming available – but it cannot be completely dismissed.
