Commanders fired John Matsko
With Eric Bieniemy making so many alterations to the coaches working under him, there were always going to be differences of opinion. The respected figure is bringing a completely new offensive system into the Washington Commanders’ thought process, which might not sit well with those stuck in their ways and incapable of change.
As it turned out, that proved to be the case with offensive line coach John Matsko. The long-time associate of Ron Rivera’s from their time together with the Carolina Panthers was fired after a meeting of the minds with Bieniemy, who is in no mood to mess around and have coaches on the books who are not fully on board with his way of thinking.
Matsko is 72 years old, so riding off into the sunset has been on the cards for a while. But in truth, the experienced coach didn’t get the necessary tune out of his players last season and change was needed in some capacity.
The Commanders have not yet confirmed Matsko’s replacement. However, a fresh set of ideas is exactly what the organization needs heading into a crucial campaign for those in power.
Couple this with the upgrades Washington has and will make at various positions, and it brings a level of cautious optimism about the offensive line next season. This will do Howell or Jacoby Brissett’s chances of providing more consistency at the quarterback position the world of good.
