Commanders 2023 NFL Draft scouting report: Luke Musgrave
By Dean Jones
How would Luke Musgrave fit on the Commanders?
- Week 1 starter
The Washington Commanders might state they are happy with their tight-end options, but ignoring this draft class would be foolish. Luke Musgrave looks like the perfect fit within Eric Bieniemy’s scheme and with a smooth transition could become their Week 1 starter at the position.
This would leave Logan Thomas on the outside looking in. But the Commanders are in desperate need of extra financial resources and the $6.92 million saved with a post-June 1 release could be better spent elsewhere.
Adding Musgrave to an offense that already has explosive difference-makers such as Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Jahan Dotson, and Brian Robinson Jr. is a tempting proposition for the Commanders. Much will depend on how the draft plays out, but there’s a chance the prospect could be available early in the second round given the serious knee injury that restricted him to just two games in 2022.
Providing there are no further complications on the health front, Musgrave has a productive NFL career ahead. And if anyone could help the player flourish from the moment he steps onto a professional field, it’s Bieniemy.
It almost makes too much sense. The Commanders have needs to fill on the offensive line and finding a shutdown cornerback early is another big-time priority, but Musgrave’s unique skill set and his potential to fit seamlessly into Bieniemy’s way of thinking cannot be overlooked.
