Commanders find the perfect OL combination

Additions have been made and more will arrive via the 2023 NFL Draft. But this is going to count for nothing if the Washington Commanders cannot find their perfect offensive line combination in 2023.

This critical area of play was a constant letdown last season. Nothing seemed to click despite multiple personnel changes, with only Charles Leno Jr. emerging from the campaign with any semblance of credit as the Commanders narrowly missed out on postseason football.

Nick Gates should man one of the interior positions and Andrew Wylie’s decision to reunite immediately with Eric Bieniemy solidifies the right tackle spot. These are the only free-agent signings worthy of starting duties, with Trenton Scott representing a versatile, backup alternative based on his recent production.

If the Commanders manage to get a capable prospect early in the draft, it further enhances the team’s chances of major improvements across their protection. Anything less would be malpractice considering how much is on the line for Ron Rivera and Sam Howell when competitive games begin.

An offensive line consisting of Leno, Gates, Wylie, a top-50 selection, and maybe Sam Cosmi is an upgrade. There is also the presence of Andrew Norwell and Chase Roullier to potentially factor into the equation.

Either way, the Commanders must choose their starting five at the earliest possible opportunity. This provides the unit with the best chance possible of developing chemistry throughout camp and the preseason.
