3 last-ditch landing spots for ex-Commanders QB Carson Wentz in 2023
By Dean Jones
With over a fortnight of free agency in the books, Carson Wentz remains without a job. But where could the former Washington Commanders quarterback land?
The Washington Commanders had no option other than to cut Carson Wentz loose before free agency. His production in 2022 following a high-profile trade from the Indianapolis Colts just wasn’t up to the required standard and the $26.17 million in cap savings made this particular move a no-brainer for those in power.
Wentz is at a career crossroads, there’s no getting away from that. We are now over a fortnight into free agency and the former No. 2 overall selection is still looking for alternative employment, which is another strong indicator of how his recent performance levels are being perceived around the league.
With another decent group of quarterback prospects emerging from the college ranks, Wentz’s options could dwindle further in the near future. So it’ll be interesting to see which franchise does take a chance on the veteran given his current career trajectory.
Carson Wentz remains unsigned after Commanders’ release
This is a steep fall from grace for Wentz, who looked like a potential NFL MVP once upon a time with the Philadelphia Eagles before injury struck. Since then, it’s been a constant stream of failures on three different teams, which means the signal-caller must start from scratch as a secondary option rather than a guaranteed starter.
That’s the harsh nature of the business. The Commanders know to their cost that no matter how productive other areas are, it all rests on the quarterback and they’ll be hoping either Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett can take the franchise forward.
As for Wentz, here are three last-ditch landing spots for the North Dakota State product in 2023.
