Could the Washington Commanders get lucky with an opportunity to select cornerback Christian Gonzalez at No. 16 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft?

The Washington Commanders added to their cornerback room by picking up Cameron Dantzler Sr. off the waiver wire following his release by the Minnesota Vikings. While the player could get back to the form displayed over his first two seasons, it shouldn’t put those in power off from taking a gifted defensive back early in the 2023 NFL Draft.

This is a top-heavy cornerback class. If the Commanders want to stand any chance of getting an instant contributor, it needs to be in the first two rounds.

Arguably the best cornerback prospect emerging from the college ranks this year is Christian Gonzalez. The former Oregon standout has exceptional traits that look easily transferable to the professional ranks, with his stock soaring further thanks to an exceptional spell of testing throughout the current evaluation process.

Obviously, adding to the offensive line from No. 16 overall should be considered. Washington also has trade-up or down scenarios that will come into the discussion depending on how the draft board plays out in front of them.

Will Gonzalez be available and how could he potentially help the Commanders in 2023 and beyond? We took an in-depth look at the possibility in our latest scouting report ahead of the all-important selection process.
