Commanders could draft Trenton Simpson

As previously mentioned, the Washington Commanders could use an explosive linebacker to solidify their second-level unit on defense next season. Even if the coaching staff wants to give Cody Barton a shot on the interior, having someone with upside at the outside spot opposite former first-round pick Jamin Davis could be a major asset behind one of the league’s best defensive fronts.

If Trenton Simpson somehow fell into Washington’s laps at No. 47 overall, which was tipped to happen by The Draft Wire recently, then the decision is an easy one. The former Clemson star is a first-round talent beyond all doubt, so this is a gift those in power would be wise not to waste.

Simpson represents a true three-down presence that can impact every area of play. His discipline and physicality against the run are exceptional, which is matched by outstanding pass-rushing explosiveness and the athleticism to more than hold his own in coverage for good measure.

This is exactly what the Commanders need. Having Simpson and Davis on the outside comes with tremendous intrigue in this scenario, which would make things easier for Barton as he looks to make an instant impression following an eye-catching switch from the Seattle Seahawks.

In all likelihood, Simpson won’t be around at this juncture. There’s just too much talent.

But anything could happen during the draft. If this results in Simpson sliding down to No. 47 overall, the Commanders shouldn’t think twice.
