Commanders could sign Gardner Minshew

This is something of a wildcard but certainly ticks most boxes of what the Washington Commanders are looking for. Gardner Minshew‘s gone to the proverbial shadows in recent years as Jalen Hurts’ understudy, but is younger than the rest on this list and has a lot of the same traits Taylor Heinicke brought to the table.

One thing that stands out above all else regarding Minshew is the player’s competitive edge. He never takes a backward step and is supremely confident in his abilities – which can sometimes be the signal-caller’s downfall by forcing balls where they have no business going.

Like Heinicke, Minshew went from an afterthought into the national spotlight with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Being flavor of the month is one thing – it’s keeping this up for a prolonged period of time that’s often the problem.

Minshew never hit such lofty heights after that and was obviously surplus to requirements when the Jaguars got Trevor Lawrence. However, he’s been around a winning franchise with the Philadelphia Eagles and could have some inside information on Washington’s divisional rival that might help in their planning process.

This would also provide genuine competition for Sam Howell. There’s no doubt Minshew would fancy his chances of beating out the former North Carolina standout, which could make for fascinating viewing in camp in this scenario.
