4 free-agent running backs the Commanders could sign in 2023

Commanders could sign Alexander Mattison
After playing second fiddle to Dalvin Cook throughout his time with the Minnesota Vikings, running back Alexander Mattison will never get a better chance to emerge from his shadow.
Mattison has been a solid performer from a backup role and even looked the part when substantial carries came his way. Much will depend on his market, but this could be a nice change of pace signing for the Washington Commanders if those in power feel like one more option is needed in 2023.
There are rumors swirling about a potential trade involving Cook as free agency dawns. In this instance, the Vikings would probably like to keep Mattison around given his familiarity with the system – and the promise of becoming their lead back will make all the difference.
While there’s just no telling what the Commanders are planning, Bieniemy’s system needs as many skill position players as possible to ensure this offense goes up a notch. But investing money that could be spent elsewhere on one of the team’s strongest position groups appears unlikely.
Selecting one on Day 3 of the draft appears the likeliest scenario all things considered. However, nothing can be dismissed at this stage and if the price is right, someone like Mattison and his physical running style could be of significant use.
