Which free-agent running backs could the Washington Commanders potentially acquire to boost a strong-looking room in 2023?

It seems as if the Washington Commanders are pretty set at the running back position. However, the arrival of Eric Bieniemy could shift the dynamic slightly in accordance with who best fits his scheme.

Brian Robinson Jr. should be the lead back after impressing in difficult personal circumstances as a rookie. Antonio Gibson might transition into a pass-catching role with J.D. McKissic a potential release candidate depending on what the Commanders do in free agency and the NFL Draft.

This is an interesting dynamic worth keeping an eye on. Bieniemy’s presence during offensive line and running back drills at the NFL Scouting Combine only adds fuel to the fire.

If going down the veteran rote is preferred, here are four free-agent running backs the Commanders could sign in 2023.

Commanders could sign James Robinson (RFA)

After acquiring James Robinson via trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets have an important decision to make regarding the running back in 2023. Breece Hall is expected to make a full recovery and with Michael Carter also on the roster, those in power might not decide to match any offer that comes his way as a restricted free agent.

Robinson isn’t that far removed from taking the league by storm as a draft afterthought coming out of Illinois State. But the player certainly has enough in his locker to thrive with the Washington Commanders.
