4 potential landing spots for Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke in 2023
By Dean Jones
Where could Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke end up playing in 2023?
After the Washington Commanders quickly ruled themselves out of the Lamar Jackson sweepstakes, their quarterback conundrum remains a topic of heated debate. Ron Rivera wants Sam Howell to win the job outright and will be given the chance to do so, but if the former fifth-round selection cannot raise his performance levels, they need a contingency plan heading into the 2023 campaign.
Washington isn’t in a position to take a blue-chip college quarterback at No. 16 overall. Therefore, examining the free-agent market for a bridge veteran is the most likely option.
This represents a gamble considering good quarterbacks don’t normally hit the market. And after missing big on the Carson Wentz trade, there is no more margin for error at football’s most crucial spot.
Taylor Heinicke is the forgotten man in all this. But where could the pending free agent be playing in 2023?
Landing Spot No. 1
Commanders could re-sign Taylor Heinicke
Even though it seems unlikely, the Washington Commanders could sign Taylor Heinicke to a short-term deal. Whether it’s something that would interest the player is another matter.
Heinicke can feel aggrieved to lose his starting spot in 2022 after Ron Rivera gave Carson Wentz one more chance to salvage his time with the organization. A move that blew up in the coach’s face and cost Washington a postseason berth.
Much will depend on Heinicke’s market, but returning to the Commanders to compete with Sam Howell cannot be dismissed entirely. Especially considering the esteem in which he is held by his teammates.
