Which Washington Commanders must be re-signed as a matter of urgency before the all-important free agency period gets underway in 2023?

With the NFL Scouting Combine drawing to a close, attention now shifts to what’s sure to be another dramatic period of free agency around the league. The Washington Commanders have already made moves to look after their own, with the addition of special teams ace Marcus Kemp representing the first of many expected incomings before OTAs arrive.

Washington has to make the necessary financial sacrifices first. But there’s a chance for the team to become major players in free agency at an important time for head coach Ron Rivera, who’s entering his fourth season at the helm.

There could be increasing pressure on those in power depending on what transpires with the ownership saga in the coming weeks. So it’s hard to put into words just how important the next few weeks are for the Commanders in the short and long term.

The dominos are already falling in Washington. But here are three players that must be re-signed as a matter of urgency before free agency.

Finding pass-rushers that can step in at a moment’s notice and produce the goods is the hallmark of any contending team. While Efe Obada might never occupy a starting role with the Washington Commanders thanks to the first-round talents in front of him, extending the player is something those in power should seriously consider before free agency.

Obada has a close relationship with Ron Rivera and showed enough in 2022 to warrant an extended stay. And keeping continuity in the trenches is absolutely crucial on both sides of the football.
