4 observations from Commanders GM Martin Mayhew’s combine presser

Commanders will examine all QB options
As stated previously, it looks like Sam Howell will get a legitimate shot at winning the starting quarterback job. However, it’s also apparent that the Washington Commanders are keeping all options open in pursuit of improvements at football’s most crucial position.
Howell has a head start in terms of team chemistry and being around the set-up last season. But if the Commanders feel like there is a better option in free agency, the 2023 NFL Draft, or even the trade market, they won’t hesitate to pull the trigger.
Martin Mayhew all but conceded as much during his NFL Combine media availability. Although he didn’t exactly make it clear which avenue the Commanders are going to go down given they are still in the planning/assessment stage.
"“There’s still a lot of discussion about that, and we’re working through our roster right now. One of the important things about the combine is an opportunity to see all the young quarterbacks that are coming out too, and we have an opportunity to look at those, as well as what’s out there in free agency.”"
This is a fascinating element of Washington’s offseason. The skill position players are in place and Eric Bieniemy’s arrival adds further intrigue, but it will count for absolutely nothing if Mayhew and other influential figures fail to find the right guy if they decide Howell isn’t up to the required standard.
And after missing big on the Carson Wentz trade, Mayhew’s job likely depends on it.
