4 former Washington Commanders who won’t be missed in 2023

Bobby McCain – Former Commanders DB
While the Washington Commanders got some decent production from Bobby McCain considering he came in as a fifth-round selection, this was the right time to part ways. The defensive back showed signs of regression in 2022 and considering the emergence of younger, more talented options across the secondary, saving money by ending the player’s contract early was the right call.
The Commanders shifted McCain into the slot cornerback position and sometimes at the safety spot in 2022. His capabilities against the run were above average, but the player’s lack of consistency in coverage often became a weak link in key moments as Washington narrowly missed out on a second-straight playoff appearance.
McCain’s departure indicates two things. That the Commanders will strengthen their cornerback room this offseason and there is supreme confidence in the likes of Darrick Forrest, Kamren Curl, and even Percy Butler to solidify the backend.
When it’s all said and done, McCain’s departure is unlikely to be all that impactful. He was well-liked among the fans, but the NFL is a business and if the Commanders feel like more is needed, this was the correct route to go down.
There should be interest in McCain when free agency begins. But that might not come with a guaranteed starting berth looking at his overall production last season.
