Commanders could sign Denzel Perryman

  • Linebacker | Las Vegas Raiders

Another big need for the Washington Commanders this offseason is finding better options across the second level on defense. Their defensive front is expected to flourish once again if Daron Payne stays and Chase Young finally puts a consistent run of games together, but strengthening the linebacking corps is something that could put this unit among the league’s most productive in 2023.

This is a good draft class for linebackers – especially at the top end. But signing a veteran that could bring instant consistency will be discussed if the right players become available on the market.

Denzel Perryman could be a gamble worth taking for the Commanders in this scenario. The former second-round pick flashed promise throughout his career, but his time with the Carolina Panthers lasted only a few short weeks before he was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders, where he went on to put together a Pro Bowl campaign in 2021.

Perryman was solid if not spectacular last season, so the Raiders might keep him around. If not, then Washington provides an outlet to start right away in the event a new deal doesn’t emerge.

The Miami product is an acquired taste to some. But he thrives in coverage and has improved gap discipline against the run in recent seasons to further enhance his career path.
