5 prospects Commanders must monitor at 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

Commanders must monitor Joey Porter Jr.
- Cornerback | Penn State Nittany Lions
One of the most pressing needs for the Washington Commanders this offseason resides in the secondary. They have to find a cornerback capable of locking down one side of the field and compliment what the likes of Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St-Juste bring to the table.
This year’s draft class is top-heavy at the position, with depth later on lacking to a certain extent. Considering the amount of quarterback-needy teams occupying positions in the top 10, it would be a surprise if the Commanders didn’t have the chance to take a potentially elite presence at No. 16 overall.
Joey Porter Jr. will be a prospect of interest during the NFL Scouting Combine and throughout the evaluation process. His physicality, mentality, and athleticism should ensure a smooth transition to the next level, which caught the eye on countless occasions for Penn State in 2022.
Porter was one of college football’s best cornerbacks for a reason. His ability in press coverage was exceptional and there is enough fluidity in the player’s movements to track opposing wide receiver downfield with ease.
The son of ex-Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter Sr. has been taught well. Adding more bulk to assist on running-downs would only enhance his chances of becoming an immediate impact player if Washington went down this route.
