Jonathan Allan – Commanders DT

  • Cap savings – $8.94 million

When examining the cap situation in greater detail, the Washington Commanders are in a pretty healthy position. Especially if quarterback Sam Howell proves to be the answer on a fifth-round rookie contract.

With that being said, there is increased urgency for Ron Rivera next season. Something that could increase exponentially if a new owner or ownership group purchases the franchise from Dan Snyder.

That’s why it’s vital Washington frees up additional funds before free agency. Another way they can get a huge lump is by restructuring Jonathan Allen, which represents a saving of $8.94 million according to Over the Cap.

Allen remains one of the true difference-makers in Washington whose importance cannot be overstated. The former first-round pick out of Alabama was sensational once again in 2022 en route to an 80.1 grade from Pro Football Focus and his second Pro Bowl selection, which was another huge step in the right direction for an indispensable member of Washington’s defensive front.

If the Commanders went in this direction, it shouldn’t be difficult to work out. It might also give the team enough wiggle room to extend Daron Payne – a close teammate of Allen’s stemming from their time together on the Crimson Tide.
