4 quarterbacks the Washington Commanders should avoid in 2023
By Dean Jones
Which quarterbacks should the Washington Commanders avoid at all costs during the 2023 offseason?
Sam Howell looks set to start OTAs atop the quarterback depth chart if head coach Ron Rivera’s recent comments are any indication. Something that comes with intrigue after an encouraging debut for the Washington Commanders to close out the 2022 campaign.
However, with Carson Wentz likely to be released and Taylor Heinicke out of contract, the Commanders should also seek alternative options before competitive action begins. This would give them a security blanket in case Howell cannot reach the levels expected.
While going down the draft is an option, other pressing needs dictate it would likely be further down the pecking order rather than acquiring one at No. 16 overall. This could lead them down the veteran path in free agency, which also comes with its fair share of risk attached.
It’ll be interesting to see which way Washington goes, and the prospect of Heinicke returning cannot be dismissed entirely. But here are four quarterbacks the Commanders should avoid this offseason.
Quarterback No. 1
Commanders should avoid Derek Carr
Derek Carr is officially a free agent after his expected departure from the Las Vegas Raiders was officially confirmed. Although this particular relationship ended on a sour note, the market could be robust for his services based on reports.
Even though it’s tempting, the Washington Commanders should look at other options. Aside from the money and length of contract Carr could demand, this would also be detrimental to Sam Howell’s potential growth during his sophomore campaign.
Carr won’t want to be sitting on the sidelines on his redemption tour next season. But starting him outright is something the Commanders couldn’t guarantee with Howell on the roster.
