Ron Rivera’s recent statement about Sam Howell heading into OTAs atop the quarterback depth chart was encouraging for the player. However, the Washington Commanders will also seek additional reinforcements in pursuit of finally getting things right at football’s most important position.

Howell showed promise when finally tasked with starting duties in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys. His poise, determination, and command of the offense were encouraging, but much will depend on what other quarterbacks become available in free agency, the 2023 NFL Draft, or even the trade market in the near future.

Carson Wentz will be released to save the Commanders more than $26 million. Although Taylor Heinicke might stick around, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Washington cut their losses despite some encouraging performances in 2022.

This is the biggest unknown when it comes to playing personnel. Do the Commanders give Howell a chance to showcase what he can do or could they be ready to make another bold move in an attempt to become more competitive next season?

In truth, nothing should be off the table right now. But it is vital influential figures within the franchise agree on their path and strike with conviction.

Otherwise, they could be NFC East also-rans once again in 2023.
