Commanders could trade for Trey Lance

Obviously, the Washington Commanders cannot stand pat at the quarterback position. Carson Wentz is all but done with the organization after failing to meet expectations and Taylor Heinicke isn’t seen as the most stable presence under center in such a competitive division.

Unless Sam Howell takes a monumental leap as a sophomore, then expect reinforcements. That’s almost guaranteed factoring everything into the equation.

What’s less certain is how the Commanders go about their business this offseason. Picking from No. 16 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft means they’ll miss out on the blue-chip prospects while acquiring veterans in free agency can be risky based on recent history.

This leaves influential figures within the organization looking at a potential trade for the second straight year. One they must get right after the Wentz experiment blew up in their faces.

Much will depend on whether the San Francisco 49ers move forward with Brock Purdy after his fairytale stint under center. But monitoring the developments of Trey Lance should be considered.

San Francisco gave up a king’s ransom to move up and acquire the North Dakota State prospect in 2021. But a serious injury derailed his starting chance before it began and it remains to be seen whether he’ll get another opportunity.

If Purdy wins the starting job, then the Commanders should put in a call. But this is dependent on how Mr. Irrelevant receivers from his upcoming shoulder surgery.
