Tight End

The first two position groups are in good shape. The final three – not so much. Actually, Washington has its in-line blocker in John Bates, who I think may become another Donnie Warren over time. We are all worried that age and injury are conspiring to reduce Logan Thomas’ effectiveness, and Cole Turner has showed virtually nothing in an injured-plagued rookie campaign.

Another rookie, Armani Rogers, flashed some enticing potential early this season before succumbing to injury. The hope is that between Turner and Rogers, one of them emerges as a dangerous pass catching threat. If not…

Dalton Schultz is slated to be a free agent. As with Tony Pollard, it’s hard to imagine he will leave the Cowboys, but if he does, he would be well worth serious pursuit. Schultz will be just 27 next season, and possesses the size and skills to be a top-level tight end.

After him, there are some decent players, beginning with Irv Smith Jr. He has struggled mightily with injury early in his career but if teams are convinced he is healthy, he has great tools and will turn 25 just before the beginning of next season. Other young vets like Hayden Hurst and Anthony Firkser could be available and could help replace Thomas’ production if the team decides to move on.
