Before we bid farewell to the bye week and begin the headlong rush toward the playoffs in the final month of 2022, I want to take advantage of the pause to glimpse ahead. What moves might be on the horizon for the Washington Commanders as they prepare for 2023? As befits a team that has been hovering around .500 for the past several seasons, the Commanders have some real strengths and some even more real weaknesses on the current roster.

Riggo’s Rag’s esteemed Ken Johannesen does a marvelous job at preparing fans for how the team may rebuild its roster through the upcoming draft. Today, I’m going to look at NFL free agency and see if there are any players out there who may be calling themselves Commanders next season.

Let’s examine each position group, going from strongest to weakest and explore some free agent options. Today, we’ll look at the offense.

Wide Receivers

With a healthy Curtis Samuel, Washington has among the best three-deep receiving groups in the league. Cincinnati is better. Maybe Miami. Buffalo? Not so sure about that. Messrs. McLaurin, Samuel, and Dotson are versatile and explosive. Of course, receivers can also be fragile, so you need depth. Washington already has a possibly-rebounding Dyami Brown in place behind the front three, and both Cam Sims and Dax Milne are reliable depth pieces.

I certainly would not expect anything major on the free agent front this off-season. But if Miami’s Trent Sherfield or Indianapolis’ Ashton Dulin were looking for a new home, I would never turn down a young player with size and speed. Such a move would only be possible if their current teams had younger players ready to move ahead of them, since both would be coming to Washington as back-ups.

Such could be the case in Dallas, where Jalen Tolbert may well supplant Noah Brown, leaving Brown looking for a new home. And I do not expect local product Mack Hollins to hold onto his starting job in Las Vegas next season, so if the Commanders wanted to add some size, he would be a good fit.

Still, I don’t really expect anything beyond a long-term project or two at wide receiver.
