Instant reactions to the Commanders’ win over the Falcons
2. The offense has an identity
Washington’s running game is coming into form, and at its peak, it is extremely tough to defend. Brian Robinson mailed in his best performance of the season, totaling over 100 yards on the ground. Not only were the counting stats present but Robinson but the efficiency was there too—averaging 5.8 yards per carry. And his receiving touchdown could be the moment he showed he was 100% back.
Antonio Gibson has found his niche with a decreased workload. And Curtis Samuel adds enough on the ground to keep the Commanders off balance. And Scott Turner knows how to scheme up the running game. His use of motion gets the defense out of position consistently, and the running game consistently produces positive yardage.
To compliment their running game, Washington has begun consistently targeting Terry McLaurin. His numbers today (4 catches, 48 yards) aren’t eye-popping but every catch was critical. And Taylor Heinicke was a few inches away from getting Terry McLaurin a receiving touchdown.
Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson are perfect complements to McLaurin, as the defense requires enough attention to be devoted to them that it makes the offense more difficult to defend. Because of this, John Bates is able to leak open occasionally for touchdowns like he was today.
Washington has its identity on offense. Pound the rock and center a passing attack around 17. It isn’t a pretty offense but it is effective enough, for now.
