The Washington Commanders’ decision to trade for Carson Wentz looks worse with each passing week. Taylor Heinicke was just named the starter moving forward until performance necessitates a change, and it’s looking like the Commanders surrendered three draft picks for Wentz to play less than half the season.

While Wentz didn’t exactly exceed expectations on the field, he did wonders as far as squashing the notion that he’s a poor teammate and leader. The locker room didn’t gravitate towards Wentz the way it does Heinicke, but that’s nothing against Wentz, who’s made strides as a teammate since his Eagles days.

Wentz famously didn’t feature during Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run in 2017 after he tore his ACL in Week 14. Nick Foles took over the reins and helped the Eagles capture their first Super Bowl title in franchise history.

Previous reports suggested Wentz wasn’t thrilled with Foles stealing the spotlight, and ex-Eagles teammate Darren Sproles recalled an uncomfortable conversion he had with Wentz prior to the NFC title game against the Vikings.

Watch Sproles fight the urge to drag his former quarterback.

Former Eagles RB Darren Sproles danced around trashing Commanders QB and former teammate Carson Wentz.

"“We had some words, but it wasn’t as big as what everybody was saying,” Sproles said. “I had to make him realize that you gotta be happy for the team. We’re all mad that we’re not playing; we’re all hurt, but you still gotta be happy for the team. He was walking around quiet, but after that conversation, that all kinda changed.”"

That’s a pretty damning quote of Wentz. It probably destroyed Wentz that another quarterback took the Eagles to the promised land. Wentz likely would’ve won league MVP that season if not for the injury, and Philly emerged as a title contender with him throwing for 3296 yards and 33 touchdowns in 14 starts.

Though Wentz was only in his second season, he should’ve put his ego aside for the betterment of the team. It’s a quarterback’s job to lead, and Wentz was seemingly sulking that Foles stepped in and did an equally (probably better) job.

When you consider Wentz supposedly voiced his displeasure with Philly’s success to other injured teammates, it’s no surprise he reportedly lost the locker room. While reports of Wentz’s poor leadership were likely overblown, Sproles’ interview with Fan Duel’s Kay Adams is a pretty bad look for the former No. 2 pick.

A former headache for the Commanders, Sproles mentioned Wentz is a great player but needs to “take coaching better” and “needs a good tight end” to maximize his potential, which attests to the rumors Wentz favored Zach Ertz.

Credit to Sproles for beating around the bush and being as civil and constructive as possible with his criticism of Wentz.

This was about the most respectful way Sproles could’ve gone about excoriating Wentz, but the fact he bit his tongue on several occasions says a lot about how Wentz handled Foles’ rise to cementing his status as an Eagles legend.
