Legendary Commanders coach Joe Gibbs facing unspeakable tragedy
Washington Commanders fans will always hold former head coach and three time Super Bowl champion Joe Gibbs in high regard. Late Saturday evening, he suffered a loss that is still difficult to process.
Coach Joe Gibbs is Washington football. He will always be our head coach. His legacy is cemented forever with the Burgundy and Gold. The leadership is undeniable. The records speak volumes and the success that team owner Joe Gibbs has experienced in the world of NASCAR racing is simply amazing. With five Cup championships and four Xfinity Series championships, Coach Gibbs is one of the most successful NASCAR team owners ever.
His latest championship occurred Saturday afternoon with grandson Ty Gibbs piloting the number 54 Toyota Camry at the Phoenix International Raceway. The team celebrated Saturday evening, but what happened a few hours later is sending chills throughout the entire NASCAR world at this time.
Former Washington Commanders coach Joe Gibbs facing unspeakable tragedy.
Team executive Coy Gibbs, the son of Coach Gibbs and the father of Ty, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at a hotel in Phoenix – just hours after celebrating the championship with his son. Word of Coy’s passing quickly spread in the garage at Phoenix Sunday morning and amongst the fans who were waiting for the Cup championship race on Sunday afternoon.
Losing Coy comes nearly four years after the passing of J.D. Gibbs – the eldest son of coach Joe and wife Pat. J.D. died in early 2019 after battling a neurological disease. Coach Gibbs has no daughters. J.D. and Coy were the only sons. It’s like a reality beyond imagining and all we can do is offer our sympathy, condolences, and prayers for the entire Gibbs family. Coach Gibbs and his wife have two daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren.
In the post-game presser following the Commanders-Vikings game on Sunday, head coach Ron Rivera (he lost his mother last week) offered condolences to Coach Gibbs and his family. Joe
Gibbs had a significant influence on current head coach Rivera as he pondered taking the Commanders job in early 2020.
In what should be a time of celebration and looking forward to the holidays for the Gibbs family, it is now a time of sadness and emptiness. We hope you will join the Riggo’s Rag family in sending our love and prayers to Coach Gibbs, Pat, Ty, and the entire family.
Farewell, Coy – you will never be forgotten.
