Washington Commanders vs Green Bay Packers best bets for Week 5
By Jerry Trotta
Week 7 is here and the Washington Commanders will look to win their second consecutive game when they host the 3-3 Green Bay Packers.
Coming off back-to-back losses against the Giants and Jets, the Commanders should expect Aaron Rodgers and Co. to be out to prove something. Let’s be honest: Green Bay at their worst — which they’ve been the last two weeks — is still miles better than the Bears team Washington beat on Thursday Night Football.
The Packers beat Washington at Lambeau Field last season, but the game was there for the taking for Ron Rivera’s group. Ultimately, though, a failure to finish off commanding drives with touchdowns proved to be their downfall.
What do odds-makers think of Taylor Heinicke’s chances to lead the Commanders to an upset win at FedEx Field? Let’s take a look at our best bets for the game, updated bettings odds, the injury report and how to watch this NFC matchup.
Best Bets for Commanders vs Packers in Week 7
3. Aaron Jones anytime TD scorer (+125)
The Commanders’ run defense has come back down to earth after a hot start, as they rank 25th against the run (131.7 yards per game) entering Week 7. After the Packers’ shocking loss to the Jets at home, Aaron Rodgers was outspoken about needing to get Aaron Jones, who totaled nine carries in the game, more involved.
If Rodgers speaks, the Packers and Matt LaFleur listen so look for Jones to get the bulk of carries in Green Bay’s two-headed backfield. Given the Pack’s red zone struggles and Rodgers wanting a bigger role for Jones, we fully expect to talented back to find the end zone — probably on a goal line carry — on Sunday.
2. Commanders +4.5 on the spread (-105)
The spread opened at -5.5 in favor of Green Bay, so the fact it’s moved suggests substantial money is coming in on the Commanders. That’s not always a good thing, but this isn’t the same Packers that usually waltz their way to the NFC’s No. 1 seed and secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Aaron Rodgers is struggling without Davante Adams and Randall Cobb, arguably his most trusted pass-catcher, is out due to injury. Further, Washington’s in-form defensive line should have a field day after the Jets sacked Rodgers four times and registered nine QB hits in their upset win at Lambaeu Field last week.
Finally, the Packers’ run defense is non-existent so Washington should be able to control the game script and win the time of possession battle. All of those ingredients should lead to the Commanders covering the +4.5 spread.
1. Antonio Gibson anytime TD scorer (+290)
Gibson has ceded lead back duties to Brian Robinson, who played 10 more snaps overall and logged five carries to Robinson’s 17 in Week 6 against the Bears. After the win, though, Ron Rivera took blame for not getting Gibson involved until the second half, when the running back sparked the offense with big runs.
Robinson found the end zone in the game, but he was surprisingly inefficient with his sizable workload, turning his 17 carries into just 60 yards (3.5 yards per attempt) and needing multiple goal line carries to score a touchdown.
Look for Gibson to enjoy a solid day out against the Packers soft run D.
