Commanders’ Carson Wentz dealing with two injuries after nasty hand collision
By Jerry Trotta
If the Washington Commanders’ offense resembled an NFL offense, the Commanders would be blowing the doors off of the Chicago Bears. Conversely, if Justin Fields was a competent quarterback, the Bears would likely have a double-digit lead over their opposition at halftime.
The Commanders held a 3-0 lead at the break, but that’s been no thanks to the offense and Carson Wentz, who’s misfired on numerous throw so far. Undefeated on Thursday Night Football in his career, Wentz left his primetime best back in the nation’s capital, though that could be attributed to the now-multiple injuries he’s nursing.
Hours before kickoff, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Wentz is dealing with a biceps tendon strain near his throwing shoulder. The injury actually had Washington questioning if the quarterback would get the green light for Thursday, but he looked good throwing in practice and was deemed good to go.
Already battling a biceps tendon strain, Wentz is now struggling with a sore finger (hand?) after a nasty collision with Bears defender Justin Jones.
Commanders Carson Wentz now battling a sore finger on Thursday Night Football.
These hand collision injuries are becoming commonplace in today’s NFL.
The same thing happened to Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in Week 1. Prescott hasn’t played since and underwent surgery on his thumb. That’s not to say Wentz’s injury is just as serious, but he’s definitely having a tough time shaking it off due to the windy climate at Soldier Field.
Despite the injury, Wentz has put his receivers in position to make plays. Sure, his accuracy and decision-making have largely been maddening, but he dropped a dime on a deep ball to Curtis Samuel that should’ve been a touchdown.
Not an easy catch by any stretch, but Samuel is paid to make those plays. Did Wentz lead him too far? Maybe, but you can’t expect the quarterback to walk the ball down the field and hand it to the receiver. Whatever the case, Wentz’s finger injury is definitely something to watch.
Already battling that bicep strain, you have to wonder how Wentz’s already-wonky accuracy will hold up in the second half now that his hand his banged up.
Luckily for the Commanders, it’s not looking like they’ll need many points to win this game. Hopefully Wentz is able to muster a strong drive or two, because 14-17 points might be all Washington needs to walk out of Chicago with a win.
