3 Cowboys weaknesses that can help Commanders pull off Week 4 win
By Jerry Trotta
1. Cowboys can’t stop the run
The Cowboys will definitely improve against the run when do-it-all safety/linebacker hybrid Jayron Kearse returns from injury.
In his absence, though, Dallas has been gashed by the running game. That can be attributed to Donovan Wilson replacing him. While Wilson packs a punch and has a nose for the ball you can’t teach, he’s wildly undisciplined. It was that lack of discipline that set the stage for Saquon Barkley’s long touchdown run Monday night.
Of course, Wilson isn’t the sole reason for the Cowboys’ run defense woes. The defensive front specializes in bull-rushing opposing QBs (they lead the NFL in sacks), but their 136.0 rushing yards allowed per game ranks 23rd after three games.
On Monday, Barkley carried 14 times for 81 yards. The Giants made a killer mistake of not getting him enough carries. In Week 1, Leonard Fournette galloped for 127 yards on 21 carries, good for a whopping 6.04 yards per attempt.
See what we’re saying? The commanders oddly abandoned the run early against Philadelphia. That cannot happen Sunday in Dallas. It would help if Brian Robinson was eligible to play, but Antonio Gibson better see plenty of work.
Control the game script and go from there.
