If you thought Week 2’s game in Detroit served as a litmus test for the Washington Commanders, we tremble to think what category of “test” Sunday’s rivalry game against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles at FedEx Field falls under. Of course, this matchup has box-office appeal as it marks the first time Carson Wentz will play his former team since he was traded to the Colts during the 2021 offseason.

Another narrative? Wentz will go head-to-head against the quarterback the Eagles (unintentionally?) drafted to replace him.

Drafted in the second round of the 2020 draft, while Wentz was the undisputed starter, Jalen Hurts took over for the benched Wentz late in that season, led Philly to the playoffs in his first year as the starter in 2021 and has looked the part of a franchise quarterback in the early stages of this season.

Long story short, this is a monster game for Wentz.

Eagles fans clearly feel the same way. It’s been two years since they’ve watched their former franchise QB take the field and they’re planning (or trying to, anyway) to overtake FedEx Field Sunday in an apparent attempt to overwhelm Wentz.

Per Michael Phillips of the RichmondTimes-Dispatch, the Eagles are bringing 20 buses packed to the brim with fans to the nation’s capital.

Eagles fans planning monster trip to FedEx Field Sunday to overwhelm Commanders QB Carson Wentz.

The group Philly Sports Trip is organizing the short ride and this specific trip qualifies as their biggest to FedEx Field in now-seven tries. Group president Vince Rizzuto noted the group’s ticket allotment sold out and that more than 1,000 Eagles fans will be in attendance, which will require a whopping 20 chartered buses.

You might think the trip’s sole purpose is to cheer the Eagles to a win. That’s where most of their motivation stems from, but there’s still hard feelings between fans and Wentz given how his turbulent tenure in the City of Brotherly Love ended.

"“We are excited to face him and this is a huge game, but are there mostly to support (Jalen) Hurts and the 2-0 Eagles,” Rizzuto wrote in an e-mail, via the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “We plan to be very loud on Sunday and hope to make it difficult for him since he made it difficult for us at times.”"

Still holding a gripe two years later with your team seemingly on the precipice of putting together a fantastic season? Spoken like a true Eagles fan.

Philadelphia is a short trip to FedEx Field and Washington fans are all too familiar with Eagles diehards packing the seats. While the Commanders faithful might have the edge in terms of numbers, the substantial crowded traveling with Philly Sports Trip suggests they could surpass the volume delivered by the home crowd if the road team asserts its dominance on the scoreboard.

That cannot happen, folks.

It’s the first of six rivalry games for the Commanders this year. The first at home. Don’t let Eagles fans strut into FedEx Field with their chest out and let them take over. A lot of that will depend on Washington’s performance, but it’s clear the city of Philly is going to try to turn Sunday into a hostile atmosphere for Wentz.
