Could you have scripted abetter start for the Washington Commanders? They thoroughly outplayed the Jaguars in the first half Sunday and should be disappointed they didn’t enter halftime with a bigger lead on the scoreboard. The big takeaway, though, was the first half performance of Carson Wentz.

Ironically enough, Wentz’s first throw of the game was grossly overthrown intended for Jahan Dotson. From there, however, the newly-minted Commanders quarterback settled in and put together a first half performance to remember in his debut for the burgundy and gold.

In the half, Wentz went 16-of-22 for 171 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged an impressive 7.8 yards per pass attempt and tallied a 125.4 passer rating. For those curious, the highest passer rating a quarterback can achieve is a 158.3, otherwise known as a “perfect passer rating.”

Wentz was pretty darn close to achieving just that and NFL Twitter, normally quick to underline Wentz’s lowlights, didn’t know what to do with itself. Let’s run through some of Twitter’s reactions to Wentz’s gorgeous first half.

Twitter reacts to Commanders QB Carson Wentz’s dominant first half against the Jaguars.

Is that Mike Florio giving Wentz and the Commanders a compliment? It may have been a back-handed compliment, but we’ll take it!

Indeed, RGIII. Wentz’s stock is soaring right now. Who knows how long it’ll stay that way, but we’ll cross that bridge when (or if) the time comes.

As surprising as it is to most football fans, Wentz looks as good as any quarterback through the first half of Sunday’s 1 p.m. games. Who saw that coming?

Is Wentz the greatest to ever do it? The people deserve to know.

A quarterback stat line you can’t help but stare at? The NFL is back. Who would’ve thought Wentz would give us this moment?

Your apology needs to be as loud as your disrespect was!

In all seriousness, you have to feel good for Wentz. The Commanders were scrutinized all offseason for acquiring Wentz to begin with, and Wentz has been in the crosshairs of the national media for how his 2021 season ended. It’s great to see him silence the haters with a dominant first half in his first game for Washington.

Of course, the job is far from finished. We’re only two quarters into the season. Put away the Jaguars in the second half. You have an 11-point lead and all the wind in your sails. No excuses to let this one slip through your fingertips.
