Taylor Heinicke trolls Commanders teammates after ODU upset Virginia Tech
By Jerry Trotta
While Washington Commanders wait for the season-opener this Sunday vs the Jacksonville Jaguars, college football’s opening weekend offered plenty of entertainment over the holiday weekend … well, sort of.
The Georgia-Oregon game was a boat race, as the Bulldogs once again proved the SEC is in a class of its own, especially in comparison to the Pac-12.
The Ohio State-Notre Dame fixture was far more compelling, but this weekend confirmed one thing: it’s Alabama and Georgia, then everyone else.
But what about the smaller, local schools?
The Virginia Tech-Old Dominion rivalry is always popular amongst Washington Football fans given it’s an inner-state rivalry. On Friday, the Monarchs upset the Hokies 20-17 in Norfolk for their second-ever win over a Power 5 program; the first time they did so since they topped Tech four years ago back in 2018.
Of course, Taylor Heinicke is an ODU alum and the Commanders have some former Virginia Tech standouts on the roster. To celebrate the win, Heinicke put ODU shirts inside the lockers of former Hokies Logan Thomas, Kendall Fuller and Joey Slye.
Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke trolled some of his teammates after Old Dominion upset Virginia Tech.
This is Grade-A level trolling from Heinicke.
Cheering on alma maters is a weekly tradition for countless NFL players and you can guarantee Thomas, Fuller and Slye took in Friday’s upset. The same can obviously be said for Heinicke, who had Old Dominion shirts at the ready for his teammates.
If anyone’s wondering if the former Hokies appreciated Heinicke’s gesture, they surprisingly weren’t receptive. In fact, according to NBC Sports Washington’s Pete Hailey, who talked to Heinicke, Fuller threw his on the ground in swift fashion.
Come on, Fuller. Heinicke was just trying to do something nice.
In all seriousness, Heinicke must be basking in the glory of ODU’s win. A former Monarchs quarterback for four years, the Commanders backup set the Division I record for passing yards in a single game with 730 (!) as a sophomore in 2012. In fairness, Heinicke attempted 79 passes and completed 55 of them.
By the time he graduated from Old Dominion in 2014, Heinicke ranked third all-time in FBS history with 16,729 yards of total offense, fourth with 132 career touchdown passes and sixth with 14,959 passing yards.
Luckily for Heinicke, this marked the only time ODU plays Virginia Tech this season, so he’ll have bragging rights for at least the next 12 months. That could spell trouble for Thomas, Fuller and Slye, who will surely be the brunt of the occasional joke (and apparel giveaway from the quarterback) throughout the season.
