2. Casey Toohill

A seventh-round pick of the Eagles in 2020, Toohill caught on with Washington after he was released by Philadelphia in the middle of his rookie year. The following season (last year), Toohill played in 16 of 17 games and started six of them with Young and Montez Sweat limited to nine and 10 games, respectively.

In a part-time role, Toohill tallied 27 tackles, one sack, six quarterback hits, 15 pressures and eight defensive stops. That output doesn’t jump off the page, but Toohill is a clear favorite of the coaching staff for his work ethic.

Ron Rivera doesn’t dish out praise willy nilly but he made time to commend Toohill’s preseason performance to the media this week, saying “here’s a guy that we picked up and all he’s done is improve and his practice habits have been tremendous.”

The Commanders don’t need Toohill to set the world on fire with quarterback takedowns. That burden falls on Sweat, Jonathan Allen and to a lesser extent, Daron Payne. As long as the former Stanford star executes his assignment and makes the occasional splash play, fans will consider that a job well done.
