Ron Rivera offers encouraging update on Brian Robinson after hospital visit
By Jerry Trotta
Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson was reportedly shot during an attempted carjacking or armed robbery in Washington, D.C., early Sunday evening. Robinson was shot multiple times in his lower extremities and is being treated at a local hospital, where he’s in stable condition and the wounds are not considered life-threatening.
Police recovered a firearm from the location of the incident and are searching for two male suspects who remain at large.
Per reports, several Commanders officials visited Robinson at the hospital, including Ron Rivera, president Jason Wright, general manager Martin Mayhew, chief medical officer Tony Casolaro, director of mental wellness Barbara Roberts and owners Dan and Tanya Snyder. Robinson’s family was also present.
Rivera got the chance to meet with Robinson and the head coach offered an encouraging update on the 23-year-old running back on social media.
“I just got done visiting w/Brian,” Rivera wrote. “He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support. He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best.”
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera says running back Brian Robinson is in good spirits after visiting him at the hospital.
The Commanders released their own statement.
"“We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, D.C.,” the statement read. “He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian’s privacy at this time.”"
Robinson traveled to Baltimore this weekend for the Commanders’ finale, but did not play in the game along with most starters and key reserve players. The third-round pick out of Alabama starred at training camp and the first two preseason games and was well on his way to winning the starting running back job.
UPDATE: Rivera addressed the media after Monday’s practice and said Robinson is doing well and there’s no timetable for his return, though he concluded saying, “It’s just a matter of time before he’s out here [practicing].”
Robinson could be released from the hospital Monday and it hasn’t been ruled out that he could return at some point this season. At this juncture, it’s too early to tell if Robinson will go on the Non-Football Injury List to start the year, which would rule the 22-year-old out for the first four games of the season.
