Commanders defensive leaders for 2022

Jonathan Allen

This is a no-brainer. Allen offers everything you want in a leader. He has been here a while. He will be here for a long time to come. His on-field play is outstanding. His off-field demeanor is just as good. Allen has been the Washington Commanders nominee for the prestigious league-wide Walter Payton Man of the Year award two years running. I would not be at all surprised if he wins the award within the next year or two. Therefore, Washington’s best defensive player just happens to be among its finest citizens.

I fully expect Chase Young to return to form and become a vocal team leader. That will not diminish Allen’s role one bit. It will be great to have two such men holding down the D Line.

Kendall Fuller

Fuller has also been here while. He was here, he left, and he came back. Not only is he the best all-around defender Washington has in the secondary, but he also has the experience and temperament to guide a young group of corners and safeties, showing them how to be professionals. Fuller is the youngest of four brothers, all of whom made it to the NFL. Clearly, this family knows something about what it takes to achieve at the highest levels.

Fuller can play man or zone. He can play the perimeter or the slot. One day, he may well move back to free safety. I hope he stays on the outside for as long as possible because I think he is most valuable in the that role. But as long as he is on the field, there will be a steadying presence in the often-chaotic world of the defensive backfield.
