Football is back, ladies and gentlemen. The Washington Commanders reported to training camp on Tuesday (rookies and veterans) and Wednesday will mark the first of numerous practices between now and the end of camp on Aug. 17.

While fans have a good idea in terms of who will make up Washington’s 22 starters for next season, several holes on the roster remain unfilled at the start of camp, leaving the door open for multiple surprises once roster cuts get underway.

Speaking of roster cuts, let’s highlight a few players who’re on the roster bubble heading into training camp.

In other words, these players will have their work cut out for them to be left standing by the end of camp. While they could very well be on the 53-man roster when all is said and done, they could just as easily get the axe from the coaching staff.

4. Jeremy Reaves

The Commanders are extremely thin at safety (and the entire secondary, really) behind starters Bobby McCain and Kamren Curl. Behind them, it’s unproven second-year player Darrick Forrest, rookie fourth-rounder Percy Butler, Reaves and Troy Apke, who’s likely to feature exclusively on special teams again in 2022.

Reaves was one of Washington standout performers during spring practices and even earned the “PBU (pass breakup) king” moniker at minicamp.

That would suggest Reaves is in the driver’s seat to make the 53-man roster, but this wouldn’t be the first time Washington part ways with the talented safety after he turned heads during the offseason.

Perhaps it’s a matter of him being undersized at 5-foot-11 and 206 pounds, but Reaves has bounced around the team’s practice squad over the last four seasons and has appeared in just 25 games over that span while making eight starts.

If history has taught us anything it’s that Reaves will need to be one of the Commanders stars at training camp to make the team.
