While Terry McLaurin was busy negotiating his new $71 million contract during OTAs and minicamp, Carson Wentz and Jahan Dotson got a head start on building their chemistry. There’s no denying that McLaurin’s holdout was the biggest Washington Commanders storyline during the spring. How could it not be?

The biggest on-field narrative, however, was the ease in which Dotson, the Commanders’ No. 16 overall pick this year, diced up the secondary.

Dotson is arguably the most exciting rookie nobody in the NFL is talking about and he delivered the goods once again at Thursday’s practice.

Partaking in just his second practice of training camp, Dotson and Wentz connected on what can only be described as a peach of a deep ball. Dotson burned Benjamin St-Juste, who’s garnered a ton of buzz this offseason amid his move to the nickel position, and Wentz dropped it right in the bucket.

Commanders offensive stars Carson Wentz and Jahan Dotson are off to a roaring start at training camp.

You know what? We can’t even say Dotson burned St-Juste. The second-year cornerback stuck right with the Penn State product.

Sometimes, though, good offense beats good defense and that’s exactly why Washington traded for Wentz. With all due respect to Taylor Heinicke and all the quarterbacks who have passed through Ashburn since Kirk Cousins’ departure, very few of them are capable of making this throw.

A simple flick of the wrist is all it took for Wentz to hit Dotson, who showed excellent concentration to haul in the pass with St-Juste draped all over him, in stride. The pigskin traveled roughly 30 yards in the air and Wentz launched it off his back foot. Imagine the 29-year-old stepped into the throw?

Yes, Wentz — and the entire offense, really — was up and down Thursday, but highlights like this give fans a glimpse into their potential. With a new QB looking to get in-sync with his receivers, growing pains are expected. The defense, meanwhile, has returned most of its starters. They should look more fluid early on.

Get excited, Commanders fans, because this surely won’t be the last time Wentz and Dotson connect on a gorgeous highlight at camp.
