Terry McLaurin likely moved numerous Washington Commanders fans to tears with his heartfelt comments he made during the press conference that celebrated him signing a three-year extension with the organization.

On top of describing his hard-fought journey to reach this milestone and showing humility that only a select few professional athletes boast, the presser underlined every reason why signing McLaurin was a must for the Commanders.

The other main takeaway? McLaurin revealed his plans to fly out to California to practice with new quarterback Carson Wentz. After sitting out the entire offseason program amid his contract negotiations, McLaurin missed valuable reps with Washington’s new QB and wanted to make up for lost time.

That alone proves why he was a team captain last year.

If thought McLaurin and Wentz were going to be the only players in attendance for the workout, however, you were sorely mistaken.

In addition to Wentz and McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Antonio Gibson, Cam Sims, Taylor Heinicke, Cole Turner and Dax Milne were present.

The Commanders’ offensive stars held a private workout in Los Angeles over the weekend.

The notable absences include Curtis Samuel, Dyami Brown, Logan Thomas, who’s admittedly still recovering from ACL surgery, and John Bates. Perhaps everyone’s schedules didn’t align amid summer break, but it’s awesome to see so many of Washington’s skill players show up to the workout nonetheless.

Wentz and McLaurin linking up for the first time is enough to fill Commanders fans’ content appetites, but this practice also (seemingly) marks the first time since the draft that McLaurin and Dotson have shared the field as teammates.

If you remember, McLaurin last reported to the team before the draft, so the star receiver was unable to witness Dotson’s dominant offseason.

It’d be foolish to overreact to this workout, as myriad offenses around the league engage in similar chemistry-building exercises before training camp. With that said, it should instill optimism that the group is working out during their time to relax and recuperate before regular season preparations kick into high gear.

The stronger their connection is to start training camp, the easier it’ll be to overcome the growing pains that come with a new QB taking over an offense. Like it or not, that’s an obstacle every team in a similar situation has to overcome and Wentz, McLaurin and Co. deserve credit for being proactive in that regard.

Already flush with weapons at this workout, it’s downright scary to think Wentz didn’t have JD McKissic, Samuel, Brown and Brian Robinson Jr. by his side. Training camp really can’t come soon enough so we can see how the 29-year-old quarterback looks with his full complement of weapons.

Exciting times, indeed.
